Skype doesn’t ring on incoming calls? Here’s what to do
1. Check Settings
Let’s start with a swift Settings inspection. In order to timely receive notifications and incoming calls, you need to be online. In addition, you need to confirm that Skype notifications are enabled and to check whether the system settings are not blocking them. If you’ve skipped on allowing Skype to access microphone and camera, you should do it now. Follow these steps to tweak all necessary settings before we can move forward:
Stick with one iteration of Skype. Keep the UWP version or win32 version, not both for the same account. Sign out and forget the account credentials. Sign in again. For UWP, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features and search for Skype. Click Advanced options and confirm that all permissions are granted. 2. Run Skype as admin
The next step we can suggest is running the Skype with the administrative permission. If you’re unable to retrieve the notifications or, as in this case, can’t hear ringing with the incoming calls, we suggest running Skype as an administrator. 3. Make sure Focus Assist is disabled
Microsoft added lots of new features in these couple of years. The “Do not disturb” mode standard found its place in Windows 10. First with the Quiet Hours and now with the Focus Assist. This mode allows users to configure the notification-free schedules and maintain the focus on work or something else of importance. If enabled, this mode will most likely prevent Skype from ringing in case of an incoming call. That’s why we suggest disabling it for the time being or configure it so it can allow Skype to provide timely notifications. 4. Reset/reinstall Skype
Reinstallation is another viable solution. This way, you’ll get to establish everything from a scratch and configure Skype with the default preferences. 5. Install the old Skype
If you ask me, the final steps should’ve been the first and only one. At least, until they completely retire the classic version of Skype. And that day is getting closer. While I find the new Skype visually likable (it resembles the modern Android instant messengers), it just doesn’t work. Plain and simple. Messages are delayed, the interface is not as simple and intuitive as before, and VoIP calls are not as good as they were back in the days. For that reason, if you can live without the looks and favor the functionality, we strongly encourage you to install the good old classic Skype and give it a try.
